Caribbean Youth Leadership Retreat (CYLR)

Rationale and History

This project was started in 2009 and initially titled The Barbados Youth Leadership Retreat. It emerged from the recognition that a gap existed in the leadership potential of Barbadian and Caribbean youth. The resulting effect was a prevalence of high youth unemployment, poor health indicators and youth involvement in violence and crime. This is further complicated by the view that young people are passive observers rather than empowered change makers. We, therefore aim to arm youth with the tools needed to create solutions to the problems affecting them. The retreat was designed to promote leadership among participants through a combination of knowledge and practical sessions. In 2013, the BYLR received recognition for its impact to Youth Development from the Commonwealth Secretariat. In 2017, the retreat opened its doors to its Caribbean neighbours and now, this year it has been rebranded as the Caribbean Youth Leadership Retreat. Today, the retreat is run by  Ms.Christa Soleyn, Mr. Rasheed Drakes, Mr. Arleigh Delaney and Mr. Allan Farmer who serves as retreat project director.

Project Profile

The Caribbean Youth Leadership Retreat is a unique leadership development initiative designed to pool together young people in Barbados in order to build critical leadership skills which are needed in today’s society. Participants are given the opportunity to learn from and exchange views and ideas with Government Officials, Leadership Training Professionals, Media Personalities, Journalists and Specialists from agencies like UNICEF, HIV/AIDS Commission, National Council on Substance Abuse along with young leaders in Barbados and the Caribbean. BYLP is presented in a fun-filled yet challenging atmosphere which is essential for the growth of the scholars.
